YOUNG AND LONELY FOUNDATION. GHANA
POVERTY ALLEVIATION PROGRAM
THE GRIM REALITY-
POVERTY ALLEVIATION AT THE FOREFRONT OF RESOLVING THE PROBLEM OF VULNERABLE CHILDREN AND MOTHERS.
CREATING INCOME GENERATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR MOTHERS IN COMMUNITIES IN GHANA
The Young and Lonely Foundation is a registered Non-Governmental, Non-Profit Making Organization advocating for the rights of children and women in communities. As an organization driven by the need to cater for the immediate and pressing needs of vulnerable children and mothers in communities, finding lasting solution to the plight of lonely, homeless, vulnerable and talented-but-less privilege children in communities caught our attention this year 2015. To this effect, our team of expect were delegated to research and develop comprehensive and straight-to-the-point strategies to resolve problems vulnerable children and mothers face in all communities today in Ghana.
The research is to expose in detail what is the central cause of the plight of vulnerable children and mothers in our communities today. Our research team lead by Mr. Francis Togbe did on-the-field survey and one-on-one, House-to-house interview in over 15 communities throughout Ghana in three month and the discovery is printed in our journal THE LONELY CHILD NEWSLETTER with the heading- The GRIM REALITY, which will be a formal paper and presentation during the Summer Academy on Global Learning Workshop in Hannover, Germany in May 2015.
During the research conducted from 3rd January 2015 to 4TH March 2015, 15,000 families in total where interviewed and made to complete Q&A Focus Slip containing 12 questions uncovering the livelihood as well as income backdrop of this families. The research came out with staggering discovery: of the families interviewed, 97% accredited joblessness and poverty to be the root cause of homelessness, sickness and disease and lack of formal education and malnourishment and harsh treatment most children in communities in Ghana faces. 2% attribute the problem of vulnerable children and mothers to lack of social Amenities like Hospitals and Orphanages in communities. 1% of Families attribute lack of Free Education Program in communities to be the cause of problem vulnerable children and mothers are facing.
As an organization that focuses on practical fieldwork intervention programs and workshops, we work directly with vulnerable children and mothers in many communities and therefore understand the harsh reality and crisis situation most children faces on daily basis in our communities in Ghana.
The grim reality is that what most NGO’S in African are bent to do is give aid instead of teach and create opportunities for its beneficiaries thereby creating wealth for themselves. Therefore it seems most of our effort in helping the society has been impractical and therefore yielding no lasting result fulfilling the proverb: “teach a man how to fish and feed him for life or give him a fish and will have to feed him forever”
Therefore the Young and Lonely Foundation initiated a POVERTY ALLEVIATION PROGRAM to support vulnerable mothers take care of themselves, children and family. This program is in two distinctive phases:
Phase 1 : Teaching lucrative trade to mothers in our communities to enable them make earns meet for their families.
Phase 2 : Creating Platform for the export of this products abroad.
Our initiate pilot project was to teach women in the northern region how to prepare shea butter as well as help them sell abroad through GILL
A group of women who are into indigenous production of unrefined Shea butter oil in Dua, a village in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region of Ghana.
It was formed to empower women with employable skills in Shea Butter production and also to establish market point for the products in other to improve their lively-hood.
Shea butter is used for cooking oil in traditional dishes and as panacea for skin and inflammatory ailments.
Shea butter is obtained from Shea nut tree called Karite in West Africa.
Shea butter processing begins when the kennel is crushed and roasted after which it is beaten after which it is grinned for further processing.
The pastes is beaten until the unrefined oil settles while the waste paste is thrown away while is thrown away while the settle oil is well cooked and allow to settle for packaging.
Shea butter is of two types yellow and the white in fact the white one is more popularly used because of its nutritional benefits.
