Volunteer FAQs

Program Requirements
You don’t need any qualifications, but you should have a good knowledge of the subject you want to teach. Self-reliance, independence and initiative are highly appreciated and a sense of humour. Volunteers must be 18 years or older at the beginning of the program. Volunteers need to have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. The volunteer should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference in the lives of Ghanaian children.

Physical Fitness
All volunteers must be in sound health and strong.

  • Be in good health and exercise regularly
  • Have no history of high altitude sickness
  • Have no criminal background
  • Have a positive attitude and teamwork mentality
  • Be familiar with traveling and different cultures
  • Be open to change and prepared to adapt to a developing nation

Project Location
Teaching volunteer projects are located in and around the city of North Tongu District, Central Tongu District and South Tongu District which is the Volta Region in Ghana.

What we provide
Airport Receive/Transfer: You will be met by our representative at Kotoka International Airport in Accra from where you are transferred to your project location. Volunteers will stay overnight in Accra at hotel accommodation provided by STYF Ghana and travel to the respective locations the next day.

Orientation
Two days orientation will be provided to volunteers. Areas like culture, safety, locations, transportation are covered in the Orientation. After your orientation is over, you will be introduced to your project.

Lodging & Accommodation
Volunteers will be staying with a standard Ghanaian Host family. Accommodation is either provided in an individual or shared room along with other volunteer. By staying with a family you will experience the local Ghanaian culture, language customs and traditions.

Food & Diet
Volunteers are provided with two (2) meals (breakfast and dinner) at the host family house. Ghanaian cuisine consists primarily of starches, soups, beans, and meat and fish. The Starches consist mainly of rice and doughy balls made from mashed cassava, plantain or yams.

Pre-departure information
After we receive full and final payment all participants are provided by pre-departure information by e-mail which will have all vital information about your program. The Pre-departure Information provides the complete details of the project locations, immunizations, things to pack list, Accommodations, Contact Information etc.

In-country support
24 hours support provided by our staff. You will be provided with the contact details of the coordinator who will be contactable 24 hours once you are in Ghana.

Program cost
Will be furnished upon request.

What do your fees pay for?
Program supervision, accommodation and meals during volunteer placement period, In-country 24 hours support and administration costs. Registration program marketing costs, information pack, administration costs, travel costs to inspect programs and communication costs with volunteers.
