THE ROLE OF EDUCATION IN ACHIEVING A GOOD LIFE FOR ALL
Education is the key to success in our contemporary world. It is the continuous process of human learning where knowledge and skills are acquired to improve understanding of issues in the environment. To us YLF, we see education as a practical process where people are made to learn certain skills to their own benefit and the society. In the field, we educate communities to create opportunities out of the socio-economic education we bring to their doorstep.
Education leads to a better life through employment creation, good health system, development of technology, improvement in agriculture, good governance and administration.
Employment; when an individual is educated he/she stands a better chance of securing a better job in the future. For instance a student who has gone through the technical and vocational system of education is able to provide some essential services that will create employment for himself which surely leads to better life.
Good health system; another factor that lead to a better life is a good health system. In some education system student learn about science and health right from the basic levels. So, as students climb the academic ladder they acquaint themselves with a lot of health issues which helps them to prevent diseases. Having this knowledge as a background they are able to research to come out with antidotes to solve their health concerns. As people acquire education and come out with remedies to their health problems they would definitely have a good life.
Improvement in technology; the coming of technology is gradually fading manual ways of doing things in the system. In Ghana for instance farmers were used to the hole and cutlass as the main tools for farming, so they could not farm on a large scale. Today, farmers in my country are using tractors, planters, harvesters, agro chemicals and gradually they are expanding their farms. In the transport sector, technology continues to make positive impact as modern cars are manufactured to make the movement of people stress free. The same can be said of computers. In every nook and cranny computers are used to fast track transactions and bring good life to the people. Even though technology comes with it adverse effects, largely it better the lives of the people.
Good governance; education broadens the horizon of people to identify lasting solutions to problems in their communities and the country as a whole. When leaders are educated, it helps to bring out good policies that will alleviate the plight of their people. In Ghana, policies such as National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) are improving the lives of the people. Our leaders are able to design these policies very well because of the kind of education they have had. Also, people are able to demand for their rights when they are educated. Such people will not allow people including politicians to trample upon their rights.
Young and Lonely Foundation (YLF) engage communities with education on various cycles to ensure that the knowledge and the skills they
have acquired are used to create ventures that will improve their lives. We believe that once parents are educated with their lives improved, it will have positive impacts on their children. One thing that is not missing in our education and sensitization is attitudinal change. We counsel clients including children to develop positive attitudes because it is one of the surest ways of promoting good life.
